Chelsea Village began as a farming community, situated halfway between Table Bay and Simonstown. Farmers initially sold their produce locally to avoid long trips into the city, gradually establishing the high streets that remain today.
The arrival of British troops later turned Wynberg into a military base, adding to the area’s growth. Remnants of its agricultural past are still visible, particularly in the vineyards of the former Sonnebloem farm, now bisected by the M3 highway.
In 1981, Wynberg was declared a Heritage Conservation Area, safeguarding the village’s historic character. Chelsea Village now boasts one of the country’s most densely packed collections of Cape Georgian-style buildings, giving the streets their distinctive charm and old-world atmosphere.
Why It Matters
Chelsea Village is more than historic homes and picturesque streets. Its village square, quiet lanes, and period houses create a peaceful, inviting environment.
The area is anchored by two historic churches: the Dutch Reformed Church, built in 1832, and St John’s Anglican Church, Cape Town’s oldest Anglican church. The Dutch Reformed Church also established a girls’ school in 1884, the precursor to Wynberg Girls’ High School.
Residents enjoy a thriving arts and culture scene. High street shops include art galleries, antique stores, picture framers, and interior designers, while cafés such as Chelsea Deli and 420 Café offer cosy spots to relax.

Transcribed Audio elements: In the heart of Cape Town’s southern suburbs lies Chelsea Village, an unofficial neighborhood or suburb of Wynberg. Chelsea Village is the midway point between Table Bay and Simonstown. And that’s how it came about.
It served originally as a farming area. And from that, instead of the farmers taking their produce into town to sell it or to Simonstown, they started the village, the high streets. So if you hear names like Wolfe Street, Durban Road, Riebeek Street, Young Lane, Ross Lane, you’ll find yourself in Chelsea Village.
We do a lot of our business in and around the area. We also have our offices in the area and we’d love to show you the treasures that we admire in the area.,
Coffee. What a great starting point as a metric for the quality of any area. Chelsea Village has two great coffee shops. This is one of them, Chelsea Deli and the famous 4 in 20 Cafe is just down the road. And it’s, it’s great to be able to have a place where you can get some quiet time, in a natural setting surrounded by herit.,
And I think that’s what draws a lot of people to these coffee shops. The second big draw card in the area is the arts and culture that is readily available for residents and visitors to enjoy. Along Wolfe Street alone this year, there have been two new studios that have opened up.
We are currently in one of those studios. This is a studio of an up-and-coming lighting designer who uses recycled materials to upcycle them into some beautiful, beautiful chandeliers. We’d love for you to see this. And the studio will be opening in the next month or two.

Not many areas in South Africa have preserved their heritage. Chelsea Village is a heritage overlay zone, meaning that within the borders of the designated protected heritage area. Not many developers can touch their hands on these unique properties.
And that’s what makes living here so unique: the culture has been preserved. A nice cultural point at the moment is the Maynardville Open Air Festival. We will post a link to the schedule and how to buy tickets in our comments. It takes place over the next month.

Great to be able to work in an area and experience properties in such an entrenched historical area that has served the southern suburbs and continues to serve the southern suburbs as an arts and culture hub. At the moment we have the Maynardville Open Air theater festival running.,

And what that ultimately does is create an area where there are green pockets for families, young kids to play, as well as people with pets.
